List of traffic fines in Croatia: You will pay dearly if you drive drowsy, and 30 euros for an open car window!

(Patria) - If you have decided to avoid the highway to save on tolls in Croatia, do not try to "make up" for lost time by speeding on local roads.

Driving too fast not only endangers the safety of everyone in traffic, but it can also cost you dearly.

For example, for exceeding the speed limit by up to 10 km/h in a settlement, the fine is 30 euros, which is more than the toll price from Zagreb to Split, 26.40 euros.

List of fines

This is one of the tips for travelers in the text about fines on Croatian roads. Here are the others.

A fine of 60 euros is prescribed for exceeding the speed limit by 10 to 20 km/h.
A fine of 130 euros is prescribed for exceeding the speed limit by 20 to 30 km/h.
A fine of 290 to 920 euros is for exceeding the speed limit by 30 to 50 km/h.
A fine of 1,320 to 2,650 euros or a prison sentence of up to 60 days is for those who drive more than 50 km/h over the allowed or posted speed limit.

On the highway, the fines for speeding are slightly milder:

from 10 to 30 km/h 60 euros
from 30 to 50 km/h 260 euros
and over 50 km/h from 660 to 1,990 euros

During the peak of the tourist season, especially on weekends, traffic jams and queues form on the highway, which is normal. Be patient and under no circumstances consider driving in the emergency lane, which is one of the most dangerous actions on the highway.

Surely every driver who has been in a stationary queue on the highway has thought how great it would be to bypass the queue using the empty emergency lane, and you have probably seen some drivers do it.

Do not try it!

And not just because of the 260 euro fine, but for your own and others' safety, because for a serious accident, it is enough for one of the drivers in the queue to think the same as the driver overtaking in the emergency lane, or simply wants to stop properly in the emergency lane.

Since drivers do not expect anyone to overtake them in the emergency lane, there is a high probability that they will not even check, and then an accident is inevitable.

And for an accident, it might be enough for just the passenger in the car in the right lane to open the car door to cool down. The left lane is the overtaking lane, and it is the driver's obligation to return to the right lane after overtaking.

Fine for flashing headlights is 260 euros

The law states "vehicles must move in the right lane on the highway if it is not congested with vehicles in a queue," and failure to do so carries a fine of 260 euros.

A fine of 260 euros is also prescribed for a driver who flashes their headlights at the vehicle in front, because the law states that "a driver must not rush the vehicle in front by giving light or sound signals".

Therefore, you are not allowed to flash your headlights at the vehicle in front as a sign that you want to overtake, even when there is no traffic jam on the highway. A fine of 260 euros is also prescribed for slalom driving on the highway.

More and more people are using their smartphones while driving, not for talking, but for texting or browsing social media, which is even more dangerous because it distracts the driver's attention from the road for longer and reduces the possibility of reaction and safe vehicle control.

The fine for using a mobile phone while driving is 130 euros.

High summer temperatures often bother drivers, especially if they do not have air conditioning in their car. Due to heat and sweating, some drivers do not wear seat belts in the summer, which is absolutely not recommended. The fine for driving without a seat belt is 130 euros, and it applies to all passengers in the vehicle, including those in the back seats, not just the driver.

A fine of 130 euros is also prescribed for a driver who transports children under 150 cm in height in the vehicle if they are not placed in a special seat. Regardless of the fine, do not do this even for the shortest distance, as it can be very dangerous for children.

Fine for an open window is 30 euros<

During unbearable summer heat, many drivers leave their windows open to avoid overheating the car. This is an understandable move if your car is under supervision, but do not do it and leave it unattended.

Besides someone stealing something from your car, the police can fine you for this action. According to the Road Safety Act, before leaving the vehicle, the driver must take all measures to prevent the vehicle from moving on its own or being moved by other persons, which includes turning off the engine, locking the vehicle, taking the key, as well as closing the windows. The fine for this is 30 euros.

Driving with an open trunk from which items are hanging and not properly secured, or if they cover the license plate, is also fined. Therefore, do not think about improperly transporting, for example, a SUP or some other large item to the nearest beach if you have not studied how to properly transport cargo in a car.

The fine for license plates that are not clearly visible is 30 euros. Drowsiness behind the wheel can be very dangerous, and as soon as the first signs of sleepiness appear, stop at the first rest stop and do not continue until you have rested. Sleep if necessary, because drivers who experience this while driving most often cause fatal consequences. If the police catch you drowsy at the wheel, they can fine you from 130 to 260 euros.

Fines for alcohol

Do not drive under the influence of alcohol, and it is recommended that if you are going on a trip, do not consume alcohol even within the legally permitted limits of up to 0.5 per mille.

We remind you that the fine for driving under the influence of alcohol from 0.50 to 1.00 per mille is from 390 to 660 euros, for driving with 1.00 to 1.50 per mille from 660 to 1990 euros, and above 1.50 per mille from 1320 to 2650 euros or up to 60 days in prison.

The strictest penalty of 1,320 to 2,650 euros or 60 days in prison also awaits drivers who drive under the influence of drugs or medication, reports B92.
