(Patria) - The National Assembly of Slovenia, in an extraordinary session today, supported the Government's decision to recognize Palestine as an independent and sovereign state.
52 out of 53 present deputies voted for recognition, while none were against, Slovenske novice reports.
Slovenia thus became the 147th member of the United Nations to recognize Palestine.
Prime Minister Robert Golob was clear: "With today's recognition of Palestine as a sovereign and independent state, we are sending hope to the Palestinian people in the West Bank and Gaza."
The largest opposition parliamentary group, SDS, today submitted a new proposal to the National Assembly of Slovenia for a consultative referendum on recognizing the independence and sovereignty of Palestine, according to the Assembly's website.
The proposal was submitted by SDS deputies, led by Jelko Godek, during the parliamentary debate on the Government's resolution proposal on recognizing Palestine.
