(Patria) - The US State Department has notified Congress of a proposed authorization for the export of defense equipment, technical data, and defense services to Kosovo worth $14 million or more, several congressional sources told Radio Free Europe (RSE).
The notification was submitted by the State Department's Bureau of Legislative Affairs, in accordance with Section 36(c) of the Arms Export Control Act.
The document has been forwarded to the Senate Foreign Relations Committee.
Section 36(c) requires the US administration to notify Congress of certain planned sales or export authorizations of defense equipment and services to foreign countries.
Details about the type of equipment or services covered by this authorization were not disclosed in the congressional document.
RSE contacted the Kosovo Ministry of Defense for more details but has not yet received a response from their officials.
The notification of the potential supply of new US military equipment to Kosovo comes at a time when US congressmen are calling on Washington to support Kosovo's membership in the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO).
Kosovo has purchased military equipment from the United States in the past.
In February 2025, Kosovo received drones purchased from the US. Months later, Kosovo was supplied with armored vehicles acquired from the US.
During 2024, Kosovo submitted a request to purchase 200 Javelin anti-tank missiles.
In 2018, Humvee military vehicles arrived in Kosovo from the US. For the procurement of 51 vehicles of this type, the Government of Kosovo signed a contract with the American company AM General in 2018.
Two years later, Kosovo purchased additional military vehicles from the US, while in 2021, the US government donated 55 ASV (Armored Security Vehicle) vehicles to Kosovo.
The Kosovo Security Force (KSF) is currently in the process of transformation into an army. This process began in 2018 after the adoption of legal amendments and is expected to last ten years.
The US has supported the transformation of the KSF into an army from the beginning, unlike NATO, which insists that these forces adhere to their original mandate, including responding to crisis situations and civil protection.
Currently, the KSF is preparing to join the International Stabilization Force for Gaza, which is part of the peace plan for the region proposed by US President Donald Trump.
