War threatens flying circus: F1 races in Bahrain and Saudi Arabia cancelled due to escalating Middle East conflict

(Patria) - The world of Formula 1 has faced an inevitable decision. Due to the escalation of the war in the Middle East, the competition's leadership has officially cancelled the Bahrain Grand Prix and the Saudi Arabian Grand Prix, which were scheduled to take place in April.

The decision, made ahead of the Chinese Grand Prix, leaves a significant void in the calendar.

The main reason for this drastic measure is the safety of the participants. Following American and Israeli attacks on Iran, Iranian counter-strikes with missiles on several Gulf countries ensued. A warning sign already arrived with the cancellation of Pirelli's tire testing after a missile hit a target near the track.

The Sakhir circuit in Bahrain is located in close proximity to an American naval base that was targeted. Although Saudi organizers insisted on holding their race, Formula 1 did not want to risk a repeat of the 2022 scenario. At that time, the race in Jeddah was held despite a missile attack on a nearby oil facility, and the drivers reluctantly agreed to continue only after a long meeting.

Logistical pressure

The decision had to be made by mid-March, which was the deadline for sending equipment and cars by sea. Due to logistical connections, the cancellation of one race automatically meant the cancellation of the other, and it was not possible to organize replacement races on short notice.

Formula 1 President Stefano Domenicali confirmed that the decision, although difficult, was necessary.

"While this was a difficult decision, unfortunately, it is the right one at this stage given the current situation in the Middle East. We look forward to returning as soon as circumstances permit," Domenicali stated.

His stance was also supported by FIA President Mohammed Ben Sulayem, who emphasized:

"The FIA will always put the safety and well-being of our community and colleagues first. After careful consideration, we have made this decision, firmly adhering to that responsibility."

Although races in Qatar and Abu Dhabi remain on the calendar, over which a shadow of uncertainty hangs, they are not currently considered threatened.
