Protest in Belgrade over detention of students, demonstrators chant 'Let them all go' and 'Vučić, resign'

(Patria) - Several thousand students and citizens gathered tonight in front of the Palace of Justice in Belgrade due to the detention of students and participants of yesterday's student protest on Slavija Square.

Savska street in that part of the city is blocked, and the demonstrators, blowing whistles, are chanting "Let them all go", "Vučić, resign".

An RSE reporter previously reported that strong police forces are present near the Palace of Justice, and that police officers in riot gear are inside the Palace of Justice building.

Students in blockade called for this protest on social media, stating that after yesterday's rally, "a large number of citizens were arrested", including numerous students.

"Yesterday we witnessed brutal police violence," the statement said.

The Higher Public Prosecutor's Office in Belgrade announced today that six people have been arrested on suspicion of preparing attacks on institutions and preparing a violent change of the "state order".

Earlier, Serbian Minister of Internal Affairs Ivica Dačić said that 77 people were taken away after yesterday's protest, and 38 were detained.

Some demonstrators and police clashed yesterday in the center of Belgrade after the official end of the student protest on Slavija Square. Several people were arrested at the time.

Serbian President Aleksandar Vučić accused the students in blockade of sending "a direct call for civil conflict and attacks on the police" to the citizens at the end of the protest on Slavija.

On the other hand, the students in blockade stated yesterday that the authorities "had all the mechanisms and all the time to fulfill the demands and prevent escalation".
