North Macedonia's Prime Minister Resigns

(Patria) - The Prime Minister of North Macedonia, Dimitar Kovačevski, has resigned, meaning the entire government is in resignation until the technical government is elected, which is scheduled for Sunday, January 28.

In a statement to the media in front of the Macedonian Parliament, Kovačevski spoke about the greatest successes of his government.

- We had an informal meeting with the ministers, during which I thanked them for their diligent work over the past two years. Today, as I said, I will do what is prescribed by law.

My resignation is signed, and I will now take it to the archives. We will meet with the Speaker of Parliament, I will wish them a successful procedure until Sunday, and then a successful election for a technical prime minister - Kovačevski said.

Regarding the technical prime minister, Talat Xhaferi, he said that he has a lot of experience in leading the parliament and assessed that his style will be different, but that the country will maintain its strategic direction.

- I came with different experience in managing corporations, so the style will probably be different, but the country will certainly maintain its strategic orientation, which is a Western orientation, a strategic partnership with the USA.

The technical government will also take care of the citizens because we are still in a crisis, as we have been for the last two years - stated Kovačevski, expressing his conviction that he will lead a new government on May 9.

"This is something that is foreseen by law, on May 9 I will again lead the Government and this parliamentary majority that will ensure the full membership of North Macedonia in the EU by 2030.".

He added that he is honored and proud to have been the Prime Minister.

According to yesterday's announcements by the Speaker of Parliament, after receiving Kovačevski's resignation, he will inform the President of the state, Stevo Pendarovski, and then submit his resignation during the day.

His cabinet announced that they will inform about further steps with a statement.

Kovačevski's resignation is the first formal-legal step towards forming a technical government that should be elected on January 28.

In North Macedonia, according to the Law on Government, a technical government is formed 100 days before parliamentary elections, in which the largest opposition party receives two ministers - for internal affairs and for labor and social policy, and three deputy ministers - for finance, for information society and administration, and for agriculture.

Parliamentary elections, according to the agreement of the parliamentary parties, will be held on May 8, on Wednesday, along with the second round of presidential elections.

The first round for the election of the President of North Macedonia will be held on Wednesday, April 24.

The double elections, which will be held in April and May, will cost the state around 17 million euros, announced the Vice-President of the State Election Commission, Ditmire Šehu.
