(Patria) - The Srebrenica Flower memorial was unveiled in front of the Islamic Center in Rijeka, a symbol of remembrance for the victims of the Srebrenica genocide. After prayers, the mufti delivered his message at the monument in the presence of numerous attendees, Mufti Dr. Aziz Hasanović.
– I am pleased that we have such a symbol in Rijeka that reminds and warns us all not to tire in promoting the universal values of peace, love, and togetherness. May the victims symbolized by the Srebrenica Flower be an inspiration to us all, a message that peace is not everything, but that everything without peace is nothing, and that we should pass on love, not hatred, truth, not lies, to the youth.
This is a testimony about a time and a people who experienced genocide in the sight of all humanity, a people who are today in the eyes of the entire world public – because by adopting the resolution on the genocide in Srebrenica, we have achieved that it will be taught in our educational institutions, all with the aim of preventing genocide, anywhere in the world.
It saddens me that we have not learned much from the Holocaust, nor from other genocides. And now genocide is being carried out somewhere, and now, as we commemorate what happened in Srebrenica 29 years ago, we are witnessing the same scenarios.
All reasonable people must raise their voices and say: enough of this, let's learn something from history and leave peace to our children and youth, Mufti Hasanović told our newspaper.
We also asked the Archbishop of Rijeka, Mate Uzinić, who, together with Mufti Hasanović and many others, unveiled the Srebrenica Flower monument, for a statement. Archbishop Uzinić recently visited Srebrenica and returned shaken.
– Srebrenica is a message about something that happened and for which we should all be ashamed because – people did this to other people. As people, we should be ashamed of the people who did it, but as people, we must not forget – all of this is so that history truly becomes the teacher of life.
Unfortunately, even at this moment, it is repeating somewhere, and that is why it is important that Srebrenica is not just in Srebrenica as a memory, but that it is also in Rijeka, that it is elsewhere, which is partly enabled by the adopted resolution on Srebrenica, Archbishop Uzinić said, among other things.
The unveiling of the monument was preceded by a round table titled "From Testimony to Resolution", at which, in addition to Mufti Hasanović, Archbishop Uzinić, Ambassador of Bosnia and Herzegovina to Croatia Elma Kovačević-Bajtal, envoy of the Speaker of the Croatian Parliament Armin Hodžić, and on behalf of the Primorje-Gorski Kotar County and the Prefect, Head Ermina Duraj, delivered appropriate remarks.
Three books that preserve the memory of Srebrenica were presented at the round table, books of testimonies and documents, whose authors are witnesses of that time. These are the books "What Remains" and "Mother Hatidža" by Esnefa Smajlović-Muhić, and Ibrahim Bećirović's book "Genocide in Srebrenica in Final Court Decisions".
