(Patria) - Slovenian MEP Vladimir Prebilič assessed that by sending a letter to European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, Serbian President Aleksandar Vučić showed he does not understand what democracy is.
"Democracy is not support for the government, but the rule of the people. When a president cannot live with the citizens of his country, it is high time for the leader to change the country – because the people cannot be replaced," Prebilič told N1.
He believes that if Serbia continues on the path of violence, the European Union should freeze funds and the accession process. He also reminded that Vučić was not invited to the Bled Strategic Forum, which, according to him, was a clear message from Slovenia that leaders who do not respect fundamental human rights do not belong there.
Prebilič emphasized that Vučić is losing the support he previously had in the European Union, and that the European Parliament will discuss the situation in Serbia next week.
"We in the European Parliament are putting pressure on the Commission. We have even nominated students in Serbia for the Sakharov Prize, as another way to show who is on the right side of history," said the Slovenian MEP, adding that the EU must not consider Vučić as the sole guarantor of stability in the Western Balkans.
