FIRE IN KOČANI: 20 people arrested, nightclub had no legal permits, officials arrested for corruption

(Patria) - Dejan Jovanov, the owner of the nightclub in Kočani where a fire broke out last night claiming 59 lives, allegedly tried to flee the country before his arrest, some Macedonian media report. Police earlier today confirmed his arrest but did not mention an escape attempt. According to media reports, Jovanov owns several other catering establishments as well as several companies in various sectors.

The youngest victim was only 14 years old. More than 150 people were injured.

Minister of Interior Panče Toškovski stated that 20 people have been arrested. The nightclub had two illegal permits, which were forged and issued in 2024.

"The Ministry of Interior has so far brought in more than 20 people in connection with this event. About 15 people are at the police station. Some of the suspects have died, some are in hospital. There are four people in hospital – two band members, the nightclub owner's son, and the manager of the legal entity. Among those detained at the police station are individuals directly responsible for this event, according to the evidence we have collected.

A person who organized the event and whom we suspect is directly responsible for this tragedy has also been brought in. Also brought in are a former state secretary in the Ministry of Economy, a former head of sector in the same ministry, a former director of the Directorate for Protection and Rescue, and three employees within that directorate. Among those brought in in Kočani are also the event organizers," Toškovski said.

He added that 25 witnesses have been questioned and commented on the illegal permits.

"This company did not have a legal permit to operate. I would not like to reveal details within the investigation, but this permit, like many other things, is linked to bribery and corruption. I want to remind the Macedonian public that, unlike previous cases, now everyone involved in the illegal issuance of permits has a name and surname and will be held accountable for it," Toškovski added.

The band DNK was performing at the nightclub, and the lead singer of DNK, two members, and a photographer died.
