(Patria) - The Police Directorate of Montenegro announced that a decision has been made to enhance the security measures for former president Milo Đukanović as a preventive measure, following information that a criminal group is planning an assassination attempt on him, and that a case has been opened in connection with this.
The Police Directorate of Montenegro states that the police, prosecution, and the National Security Agency are synchronously undertaking measures and actions within their jurisdiction regarding the information that a criminal group from a neighboring country is planning an assassination attempt on Đukanović, in collusion with the security services of another neighboring country.
They remind that one media outlet reported that the office of the former President of Montenegro stated that Đukanović had informed the competent Montenegrin authorities that he had received information about an assassination attempt being prepared against him, and that neither Đukanović nor "certain international officials from the intelligence community" had informed them about it, Srna reports.
"The National Security Agency, before, during, and after the media publication, engaged in international cooperation to verify the received information. The Police Directorate was not informed about the case upon its receipt, as it was in the verification status," the statement reads.
Following the media publication, the Police Directorate received relevant information from the National Security Agency yesterday afternoon, which is still verifying its credibility.
The Directorate states that immediately upon receiving the information, measures and actions within the police's jurisdiction were taken, including informing the competent prosecutor's office, and a case has been opened.
"While the process of establishing the relevant facts and circumstances, including their credibility, is ongoing, a decision has been made to enhance the security measures for the former President of Montenegro as a preventive measure, and no further reduction in their scope was planned for the upcoming period, as reported by some media outlets," the statement reads.
