Plenković: Srebrenica is a symbol of warning, evil reached genocidal form here and the international community failed

(Patria) - Andrej Plenković, Prime Minister of the Republic of Croatia, addressed the commemoration of the victims of genocide today.

"I am addressing you on the occasion of the 30th anniversary of the genocide in Srebrenica, the most horrific crime on European soil after World War II. They were killed simply because they were Bosniaks. On behalf of the Government of the Republic of Croatia, I express my sincere condolences to the families of the victims whose pain is immeasurable. Croatia and Bosnia and Herzegovina were victims of aggression by Milošević's regime. Thousands of families mourned their loved ones. Just like you here, we in Croatia are searching for the missing, and their fate remains an open wound for us.

We look at you who have carried the pain of loss but also dignity for three decades. Srebrenica is a symbol of warning. Here, evil reached its genocidal form. Here, both the international mechanism and the fundamental principles of humanity failed. Today, we feel even more strongly how fragile and precious peace is. Srebrenica permanently obliges us to ensure that crimes do not go unpunished and that victims are not forgotten. Srebrenica is a universal message that such a crime never happens again.

Regardless of faith or nation, justice and true reconciliation can only be built on truth, justice, and sincerity. Croatia sincerely wants to see Bosnia and Herzegovina as a full member of the EU and strongly supports all efforts in that direction. With faith in a common future, we bow to the victims of genocide. May all the innocent rest in peace," said Plenković.
