Detention ordered for girl who hit student with Citroen at Belgrade protests

(Patria) - The Higher Court in Belgrade has ordered detention for up to 30 days for Milica S. (25) on suspicion that on January 24, during a protest blockade in New Belgrade, she seriously injured a student with her car and attempted to take the lives of several people.

Detention was previously requested by the Higher Public Prosecutor's Office in Belgrade, and the suspect is charged with attempted aggravated murder.

The twenty-five-year-old student of the Faculty of Agriculture in Belgrade was injured when, during a mass protest in the capital of Serbia, the girl drove her car into a group of students who were acting as marshals at the blockade.

The prosecutor's office announced that there are grounds for suspicion that Milica S. first stopped her Citroen car due to the large number of people gathered who were blocking the road.

Then, at the moment when several students wearing yellow and orange fluorescent vests, who were performing marshal duties, were in front of the vehicle, she suddenly, recklessly, and violently started the vehicle and abruptly drove towards the students standing in front of her car.

"The suspect hit K.T. with the front of the vehicle, who was standing in front of the car with a megaphone in her hand, causing K.T. to be thrown onto the hood of the vehicle, then onto the windshield, after which she was thrown to the ground on the left side, hitting her head on the curb and sustaining serious life-threatening injuries," the statement said.

It was added that the suspect also hit V.M. with the left side of the vehicle, throwing him onto the hood, and then throwing him to the left side, causing him to fall to the ground.

In addition to students, pupils from numerous high schools that had suspended classes, their parents, as well as educators on strike in schools across Serbia, were on the streets.

The prosecutor's office also added that she then continued to speed away from the scene, leaving the injured without help and endangering the safety of other participants in the blockade, before being quickly stopped by present students and citizens.

Milica S. was taken from the scene of the incident by plainclothes police officers, and the prosecutor's office announced that she is suspected of attempted aggravated murder.
