(Patria) - The 41-year-old truck driver, who hit three girls in Lovran yesterday, killing one, has been criminally charged with negligence for failing to maintain parts of the truck, causing the death and injuries of pedestrians, the police announced today.

The criminal investigation into the 41-year-old driver was conducted by the Opatija police, the Primorje-Gorski Kotar Police Administration announced.

The driver is suspected of having "caused the death and injury of pedestrians through negligence, by failing to maintain the operating devices in proper condition and not acting according to regulations or technical rules on protective measures".

In Lovran, around 10:20 AM, due to improper securing of a movable part, a metal stabilizer, known as a truck leg, extended and hit pedestrians walking on the sidewalk in the same direction as the truck, the police stated.

A 22-year-old woman died at the scene of the accident, a 28-year-old female pedestrian was injured, and a third, 22-year-old female pedestrian, escaped unharmed, the Police Administration added.
