After Split with Golob, Klemen Grošelj Goes on Independent Campaign

(Patria) - After a turbulent political split with Slovenian Prime Minister Robert Golob, Klemen Grošelj, a Member of the European Parliament from the former party Lista Marijan Šarec, which collectively joined the currently ruling Freedom Movement, has launched an independent campaign.

Although he has very little time left to collect signatures for the European Parliament race, he believes he could gather the signatures for his list.

After personal disappointment, when the ruling Freedom Movement cut off his ambitions to repeat his Brussels mandate and a political divorce from Prime Minister Golob, Grošelj is seeking to win a new European Parliament mandate with a different lineup.

"Yes, it is a liberal green circle. We somehow decided to come up with a competent alternative. Even public opinion polls show that this space in the middle is quite open. And based on everything that has happened, I decided to try to create this alternative," Grošelj told the media.

He is being assisted in the project by former deputy of Janez Janša's Slovenian Democratic Party, Andrej Čuš, who, according to publicly available data, opened an election account last week. Unofficially, the idea is that former Freedom Movement deputy Mojca Šetinc Pašek will also participate in the liberal part of the list, although she is still hesitating.

"1,001 signatures is the magic threshold. That is, one as a backup, to joke a bit. It is a logistically very demanding thing. I reckon it could be done, but of course I am a political realist," Grošelj said in an interview with Pop TV.

Slovenian media speculate that Matjaž Nemec from Tanja Fajon's Social Democrats could also join the bloc.

The spectrum from liberals (Grošelj), through populists (Čuš), to social democrats (Nemec) could win a significant number of votes.

Elections for the European Parliament in Slovenia are scheduled for June 9. This country sends eight representatives to the European Parliament.

In the current term, Grošelj has repeatedly worked for Bosnia and Herzegovina. He has gathered and continues to gather Members of the European Parliament for initiatives concerning our country and strongly lobbies for the interests of BiH.
