After Kosjerić, opposition declares victory in Zaječar as well: 'Dawn has broken after 13 years'

(Patria) - Local elections were held today in two municipalities in Serbia - Zaječar and Kosjerić. Polling stations closed at 8:00 PM, and preliminary results are already coming in. Accordingly, the opposition in the municipality of Kosjerić has declared victory, and a few minutes later, in Zaječar as well. While votes are being counted, Belgrade students have headed towards the Presidency in the meantime.

Regarding these local elections, it is worth noting that Kosjerić is, incidentally, the first place where students officially called for the unification of the opposition and supported their list.

Many consider these local elections to be the first test for the ruling Serbian Progressive Party (SNS).

During the day, citizens were choosing between eight lists in Zaječar and three in Kosjerić. The day was marked by high voter turnout, a tense atmosphere, and the presence of police and gendarmerie.

After the opposition's victories were declared in both places, most citizens received the news with enthusiasm, stating that they are currently witnessing the return of freedom to Serbia.

Earlier, from the opposition in Kosjerić, they told Serbian media that they have a convincing lead over the ruling parties, primarily referring to the Serbian Progressive Party (SNS), whose long-time member, current Secretary General Aleksandar Vučić, is the current President of Serbia, against whose regime students and a large number of citizens of that neighboring country have been fighting for months.

While official results have not yet been announced, celebrations were recorded in the opposition's election headquarters in Zaječar, as in Kosjerić.

"I have been dreaming of this moment for 13 years. After 13 years, dawn has broken in Zaječar, and victory comes from the East. Finally, we are bringing Zaječar home," said Dragana Rašić from the Democratic Party.

Three lists are competing for the four-year term of the new local government: the ruling Serbian Progressive Party (SNS), the unified opposition list 'United for Kosjerić', and the minority Russian Party.
