(Patria) - On this day in 1992, five babies died as a result of an attack on the „Zehra Muidović“ maternity ward in Sarajevo.
A fierce infantry attack on the maternity ward began on the morning of May 26, 1992, followed by a terrible shelling in the afternoon. Projectiles fired from cannons on Poljine and above the settlement of Nahorevo hit the maternity ward building.
There were 130 women and 70 newborns in the maternity ward, and a complete catastrophe was prevented by the superhuman efforts of the defenders. Most of the maternity ward's equipment was destroyed.
A day later, the surviving babies and women were relocated. The end of the war found the maternity ward building in a catastrophic state, but it was renovated and reopened at the end of 2010.
