132 people killed on Croatian roads in the first half of this year

(Patria) - One person died on Croatian roads over the past weekend, and police recorded more than 5,400 violations, including over 1,900 cases of speeding, according to data from the Croatian police.

In addition to 1,902 speeding violations, among the most serious offenses police recorded 778 cases of not using a seatbelt, 303 cases of improper mobile phone use while driving, and 392 violations for driving under the influence of alcohol.

The region with the highest number of speeding violations was Sisak-Moslavina County with 316 such offenses, while the highest recorded speed (186 kilometers per hour) was measured in the Primorje-Gorski Kotar region.

The highest number of drunk driving violations was recorded in the Split-Dalmatia police area (67), while the highest blood alcohol concentration of 2.99 g/kg was measured in the Sisak-Moslavina region.

Seatbelts were most often not used by drivers in the Zagreb area, where the highest number of mobile phone violations while driving was also recorded.

Additionally, 21 repeat offenders of the most serious violations were stopped, most often for drunk driving and speeding.

On Croatian roads in the first half of this year, 132 people were killed, which is 18 more fatalities than last year. According to the grim statistics, nearly one in three victims died on a motorcycle.

To increase road safety, the police are implementing both educational and repressive measures in the form of stricter penalties. The goal is to halve the number of fatalities by 2030.
