(Patria) - Macedonian carriers announced last night that they will no longer block the freight sections of border crossings.
Their decision followed the European Commission's decision yesterday to introduce a new visa issuance strategy that will solve the problem of Western Balkan professional drivers regarding the 90-day stay limit within 180 days in the Schengen zone.
"Since we have received the confirmation we were expecting for this change, we inform you that the protest organized by 'Makam-trans' at the Deve Bair, Delčevo, Novo Selo, Dojran, Bogorodica, Medžitlija, Ćafasan, Blace, Blato, and Stenje border crossings will be suspended from tonight at 8 PM for entry and exit from the country," the "Makam-trans" association wrote on its Facebook page last night.
The Deputy Prime Minister of North Macedonia and Minister of Transport, Aleksandar Nikoloski, previously announced that he had "received excellent news from Brussels".
"Our positions have been accepted. Drivers are accepted (in the EU) as professionals. That is what we were asking for. After the protests and a strong offensive, Brussels will adopt a new visa strategy that will solve the problem of professional drivers. Thanks to all friends of Macedonia who helped solve this problem," Nikoloski wrote on Facebook.
Let us remind you that truck drivers from North Macedonia, Serbia, Montenegro, and Bosnia and Herzegovina began blockading border crossings at noon on January 26, considering that the new entry and exit control system (EES) in the Schengen zone discriminates against them compared to EU carriers.
The Association of Carriers of Montenegro suspended border blockades at noon yesterday after reaching an agreement with the Government on their domestic demands. On the other hand, BiH carriers announced that they remain at the borders and will continue the blockades until their demands are met.
