Janša rallies support, seeks mandate on deadline day

(Patria) - After the completion of the second round of nominations, SDS leader Janez Janša's candidacy will be submitted to the National Assembly today, as stated. By last night, all parties of the future coalition, in addition to Janša's SDS, NSi, SLS, Fokus, and Democrats, had confirmed the coalition agreement and entry into the government. Janša can also count on the support of the Resnica party. The leader of the EPP group, Manfred Weber, also gave his support to Janša.

After the Democrats and NSi, who did so last week, the SLS, Marko Lotrič's Fokus, and of course SDS, which will lead the government, approved the key part of the coalition agreement for the 2026–2030 mandate period last night.

This means that the conditions for submitting the candidacy for the prime minister-designate have been met, announced the most likely candidate Janez Janša. He needs 46 votes for election, while the parties that signed the coalition agreement have a total of 43. However, Janša can also count on the support of the Resnica party, although it will not formally be part of the coalition. As its president Zoran Stevanović stated on Saturday, they will also give their signatures of support for Janša's candidacy.

The leader of the European People's Party (EPP) political group, Manfred Weber, emphasized today in Strasbourg, speaking about the formation of the new Slovenian government led by Janez Janša, the importance of stability and the establishment of a government that will be pro-European, pro-Ukrainian, and that will respect the rule of law. According to him, Janša has the experience needed to ensure this.

When asked by journalists how he comments on the fact that Janša's new government will most likely have the support of the Resnica party, known for its sovereignist and pro-Russian stances, Weber stressed that pro-European orientation, support for Ukraine, and respect for the rule of law are the basic guidelines of the EPP that all European governments must adhere to.

According to Weber, there is no doubt that Janša and his government will respect these principles. He also emphasized that Janša will become the Prime Minister of Slovenia in accordance with the will of the voters expressed in the elections.

Weber recalled that in 2022, while he was the head of the Slovenian government, Janša was among the first European leaders to visit Ukraine after the start of Russian aggression.

"So, good luck," said the leader of the EPP political group, to which SDS also belongs, to Janša.
