(Patria) - White smoke appeared this afternoon above the Sistine Chapel, meaning the cardinals have elected the 267th head of the Roman Catholic Church.
The Pope is expected to soon go to the "Room of Tears," a small room adjacent to the Sistine Chapel, where he will don the papal vestments and prepare to appear on the balcony of St. Peter's Basilica.
There, his name will be announced with the traditional proclamation "Habemus Papam" (We have a Pope) by Cardinal Protodeacon Dominique Mamberti.
White smoke was released from the chimney of the Sistine Chapel shortly after 6:08 PM. The conclave lasted two days, and those gathered in St. Peter's Square greeted the white smoke with cheers and applause.
The new Pope is expected to be presented within 60 minutes.
