European Union Calls for Early Elections in Serbia

At a meeting of the foreign policy committee in the Austrian parliament on Wednesday, Serbia was also on the agenda. Namely, the Deputy Chairwoman of the Foreign Policy Committee and representative of the Austrian Greens, Meri Disoski, called on the Austrian Minister of Foreign Affairs, Beate Meinl-Reisinger, to advocate at the European level for the initiation of dialogue with the Government of Serbia, given the mass protests against the regime of Aleksandar Vučić.

The topic of these discussions should be, according to her words, the fight against corruption, strengthening the rule of law, and punishing "corrupt actors".

Disoski also emphasized that the European Union, in its role as mediator between political forces in Serbia, should support the holding of new elections within the next 12 months.

"In addition, an independent investigation should be conducted into the possible use of sonic weapons against demonstrators, as well as ensuring full transparency regarding the circumstances of the collapse of the railway canopy in Novi Sad, in which 15 people were killed," she stated, reports OTS.at.

Gudrun Kugler, a representative of the Austrian People's Party (OVP), stated that Austria has had close cooperation with Serbia for years, therefore it does not want to be too publicly exposed, but rather to monitor and support internal processes in the country.

The Greens' request is currently on hold.
