Croatia Among European Countries with Most Fatalities in Collisions per Million Inhabitants

(Patria) - More than 20,000 people died in traffic accidents on European roads last year, and Croatia remains among the countries with the highest number of fatalities per million inhabitants.

Since the beginning of this year, 193 people have died, but it is particularly concerning that the number of motorcyclists among the victims is increasing, writes HRT.

- Unfortunately, this year is a record year for the number of traffic fatalities. We have a higher number of traffic accidents compared to last year, but more importantly, a higher number of motorcyclist fatalities.

Every fourth person is a motorcyclist or a passenger on a motorcycle - says Kristijan Oslić, Director of the Service for Prevention of Abuses and Improvement of Claims Processing.

- We very often witness collisions where drivers slide, fall, and at low speeds, unfortunately, drivers, if unprotected, if they are not wearing the necessary equipment like a helmet, hit the roadside infrastructure and suffer serious bodily injuries - points out Željko Šarić, Associate Professor at the Faculty of Transport Sciences.

The cause of traffic accidents is most often the inappropriate speed of motorcyclists or failure to yield to cars, and at the moment before a potential collision, a four-wheeled vehicle will brake sooner than a two-wheeled one.
