CROATIA Social media call for boycott of retail chains and shopping on 24 January due to price increases

(Patria) - Due to rising prices in retail chains in Croatia, a call for a boycott of retail chains and shopping on Friday, 24 January has spread on social media. With the switch to the euro on 1 January 2023, prices increased in neighbouring Croatia.

Ahead of Christmas, the media reported on prices at markets, butcher shops, and fishmongers. Many pensioners in Croatia cannot afford meat on their table, or only do so during the holidays in small quantities.

A message with the following content is spreading on social media and via mobile phones:

“24.01. in Croatia there is a boycott against high food prices. People are called upon not to buy anything that day, absolutely nothing. Prepare for that day as if it were a Sunday. The same thing happened in the United Kingdom with fuel; the next day it dropped by 15 pounds per litre, but they also raised wages by £100 per month. I know the UK and Croatia are not the same, so there is no need to comment on this; if you want to do something, it will be done. If you look at it like political elections, you will do nothing. If 10% of people do this, it is a big loss for retail chains, and you will lose absolutely nothing that day, while they will. Greetings to all, I am sending this as a group message and include as many people as possible.”
