Chaotic scenes in Karlobag: Water on roads, warnings across Croatia

(Patria) - Last night, severe weather hit parts of Croatia, with the most dramatic scenes coming from Karlobag, where streets were completely flooded, accompanied by strong winds and heavy rainfall.

Residents struggled to reach safe places as waves of rain and strong gusts of wind created chaotic scenes.

The Croatian Meteorological and Hydrological Service (DHMZ) issued a red warning for the Zagreb, Karlovac, and Rijeka regions, while the rest of the country is under an orange warning. According to DHMZ, an approaching upper-level cyclone and influx of moist, unstable air are creating conditions for strong thunderstorms, heavy rainfall, hail, and a sudden drop in temperature.

In addition to Karlobag, the storm also affected Istria, the Kvarner islands, parts of Central Dalmatia, and the city of Karlovac.

The severe weather also caused traffic problems. The Croatian Automobile Club (HAK) reported that a section of the A6 motorway was flooded due to heavy rains:

- On the A6 motorway, in the Vršek, Lučice, and Sopač tunnels in the direction of Rijeka, traffic is moving in one lane with a speed limit of 60 km/h due to flash floods. The road surface is wet or damp and slippery in places.

There is a significant amount of water accumulating on some sections, so we warn drivers to adjust their speed and driving style to the road conditions and maintain a safe distance between vehicles - the HAK statement reads.
