SARAJEVO, (Patria) - Albanians from southern Serbia, living in three municipalities in the Preševo Valley, namely Preševo, Bujanovac, and Medveđa, are announcing major protests for March, writes the Albanian minority newspaper in Switzerland LeCanton27.
The main demand of Albanians in these three municipalities is the formation of a community of Albanian municipalities, modeled after the announced community of Serbian municipalities in northern Kosovo. According to the claims of Albanian representatives in these three municipalities, they suffer terrible discrimination. They use the fact that 20 seats are secured for Serb representatives in the Kosovo parliament, who number between 80 and 100 thousand, while at the same time 140,000 Albanians in Serbia have only one representative in parliament, as a comparison.
They blame official Belgrade the most for this situation, as well as European institutions in Brussels, which they claim are not interested in dealing with this issue at all.
- Albanians in the Preševo Valley are discriminated against in all spheres. We want reciprocity, we are not asking for anything more than Serbs in Kosovo, said Šaip Kamberi, the only Albanian in the Serbian assembly, to LeCanton27.
