(Patria) - Belgian MEP Kathleen Van Bremt sent a clear message to Serbian President Aleksandar Vučić, telling him via social network X (formerly Twitter) that it is time to listen to the demands of Serbian citizens who are calling for free and democratic elections.
„A true leader does not silence his people. He enables them to have free democratic elections. That is what the people of Serbia are asking for. It is time to listen to them, @avucic #pumpaj“, Van Bremt wrote in Serbian.
A day earlier, Van Bremt expressed full support for the protesting citizens of Serbia, stating that it is time for Europe to stop its policy of appeasing the regime in Belgrade.
„Full support to the people of Serbia who are protesting for freedom, democracy, transparency and accountability of Vučić's regime. It is time for Europe to show support for their struggle. Stop the appeasement, now!“ she stated.
In doing so, she used the term “appeasement”, which in a diplomatic context refers to the policy of yielding to dictatorial regimes, most commonly associated with the behavior of Western powers towards Nazi Germany and Fascist Italy in the 1930s.
Van Bremt has also previously sharply criticized the state of democracy in Serbia. In May this year, during a debate in the European Parliament on the report on Serbia, she warned of the loss of European values in that country.
„Rule of law, democracy, fundamental rights – all are under threat. Today, Serbian students are braver than the European Commission, perhaps even than the entire European Union. They are pointing out systemic deficiencies of democracy, fighting for civil liberties and condemning widespread corruption. They are fighting for European values and deserve our full support“, Van Bremt said at the time.
