EU demands distance from Russia: What does Vučić's decision to go to Moscow mean?

(Patria) - Regarding the announcement by Aleksandar Vučić that he will be in Moscow on May 9th to mark the "Victory Day over Fascism", European Commission spokesperson Markus Lammert stated that the European Union wants to count on Serbia and that it is important for the country to confirm its strategic direction towards the EU.

“The European Union is clear with everyone, including Serbia – relations with Russia cannot be business as usual while the war is ongoing,” Lammert said.

He repeated this statement after an additional journalist's question, adding that he does not want to speculate about possible consequences.

“Serbia has applied for EU membership. The European Union wants to count on Serbia as a reliable European partner when it comes to common principles, values, security, and progress. It is necessary for Serbia to clearly confirm its strategic direction. We have been crystal clear with all our partners, including candidate countries, among which is Serbia: relations with Russia cannot be normal while Putin's regime is in power and while the unprovoked and unjustified Russian aggression against Ukraine continues,” Lammert said.

As Vučić stated on April 23rd, he “has not changed his stance despite pressure” and announced that he will travel to Moscow on May 9th for the parade marking the “80th anniversary of the victory over fascism in World War II”.
