Đukanović: Denying genocide leads to an abyss and unsustainable revisionism of Greater-Serbian ideologies

(Patria) - Former President of Montenegro and long-time leader of the Democratic Party of Socialists (DPS) Milo Đukanović commented on the day marking 29 years since the genocide committed in and around Srebrenica.

“It is the 29th anniversary of the genocide in Srebrenica, the greatest suffering in Europe since World War II. An occasion to once again bow to the shadows of over eight thousand victims and to express sincere sympathy to all those who lost their loved ones in that insane crime,” Đukanović stated on social network X.

This, according to the former Montenegrin president, is a terrible warning that confronting the truth and responsibility is the only path to a more certain future.

“Likewise, denying that genocide leads to an abyss and unsustainable revisionism of Greater-Serbian ideologies and policies that led to it and that are persistently resurfacing in these regions,” Đukanović emphasized.

He notes that today, for the first time since the recent adoption of the UN Resolution, July 11th is marked as the International Day of Remembrance of the Genocide in Srebrenica.

“This is an important decision by the international community, a message that the most responsible actors of that crime must face their role in the recent past. That act itself, unfortunately, showed how eroded the reputation and strength of the UN are. At the session of the General Assembly, many countries were not ready to confirm the decision of the court they established, which qualified the crime in Srebrenica as genocide 17 years ago,” Đukanović underlined.

He also points out that this testifies to the authority of current Western policies today.
“As long as the majority of UN member states deny, abstain, hesitate, and show no willingness to call the crime in Srebrenica by its true name and condemn it, there is no hope for a better future for the region, nor a clear conscience for the great and powerful whose policies are driven by day-to-day political interests, mired in rotten compromises.

Therefore, the greatest responsibility lies precisely with us who live in these regions to show both ourselves and the world that we are ready and capable of bearing responsibility and admitting tragic mistakes from the recent past.

This will open hope for a more certain perspective for today's and future generations,” Đukanović concluded.
