(Patria) - At last night's anti-government protest in Belgrade, 48 police officers were injured, 22 people sought medical assistance, and 77 were detained, including one minor.
This was announced today by the Serbian Minister of Internal Affairs, Ivica Dačić, while the opposition accuses the authorities of brutal force aimed at suppressing citizens' unrest.
The police intervened last night after the official end of the mass student protest in the center of Belgrade, from which the demand for early elections was reiterated.
A few minutes before 10 PM, students announced the end of their otherwise peaceful protest, which had gathered tens of thousands of people.
According to the official police estimate, there were about 36,000 participants in the protest, while the Public Assembly Archive organization estimated that about 140,000 people gathered in Slavija and surrounding streets.
- Out of 77 detained protesters, 38 were held, and criminal charges will be filed against 35, along with misdemeanor proceedings against 26 people - Dačić told reporters at a joint press conference with Serbian President Aleksandar Vučić, who called last night's intervention by police forces against protesters a "victory for the state".
