Montenegro celebrates Statehood Day

(Patria) - Montenegro today marks Statehood Day, commemorating July 13, 1878, when it was recognized as an independent state at the Congress of Berlin, and the same date in 1941, when the popular uprising against fascism began.

July 13 is celebrated as Statehood Day in Montenegro because on that day in 1878, its independence was recognized at the Congress of Berlin, and on the same day in 1941, a general popular anti-fascist uprising was launched.

This was the prelude to the National Liberation Struggle, in which, through important political decisions, the restoration of Montenegro's statehood began, abolished in 1918 with its accession to Serbia, i.e., the Kingdom of Serbs, Croats, and Slovenes, which later became Yugoslavia.

At the Montenegrin Anti-Fascist National Assembly, held at the end of 1944 in Kolašin, a decision was made on Montenegro's status as one of the federal units of the future federative Yugoslavia.
