Montenegro has 633,158 inhabitants

(Patria) - According to the preliminary results of the 2023 census, there are 633,158 inhabitants in Montenegro - announced the director of Monstat, Miroslav Pejović.

The census, he says, collected data on 217,441 households and 396,873 apartments.

A total of 600,273 people were counted during the data collection phase.

The preliminary data, he points out, are subject to change, and the final results will be published later this year.

The deputy director of Monstat, Snežana Remiković, announced that the number of inhabitants has increased by about two percent compared to the data from the 2011 census.

- When we talk about households, the growth is slightly higher - we have 217,441 households, and when we talk about apartments, we have the largest growth - i.e., about 26 percent, referring to the 396,873 apartments for which data were collected - stated Remiković.

The largest number of inhabitants are in Podgorica, Nikšić, Bar, and Bijelo Polje. There, as Remiković said, slightly more than 50 percent of Montenegro's population is concentrated.

The smallest number of inhabitants was recorded in Šavnik, Plužine, and Žabljak.

An increase in the number of inhabitants was recorded in 13 municipalities.

The census was held from December 3 to 28, after its start was postponed several times due to the demands of the opposition and councils of minority peoples to first fulfill certain conditions for its implementation.

The census in Montenegro was supposed to be held in 2021, but it was postponed due to the coronavirus pandemic. The previous one was held in 2011.
