(Patria) - Four children have died of whooping cough at the Institute for Mother and Child Care "Dr Vukan Čupić" in Belgrade, said RTS prof. dr. Vladislav Vukomanović, cardiologist and head of the pediatric clinic at the Institute. One child's life is in danger and is on a respirator.
Prof. dr. Vukomanović emphasized that infants aged two, three, or four months can develop a very severe clinical picture of whooping cough, which resulted in death in four children at the Institute.
"One child on a respirator means that their life is in great danger," said the professor.
He says that 70 children are positive for pertussis, or whooping cough, and about half of them are hospitalized.
"This indicates an exponential increase in children exhibiting a severe clinical picture," noted prof. dr. Vukomanović.
