Brnabić again denies genocide in Srebrenica

(Patria) - President of the National Assembly of Serbia Ana Brnabić sparked strong reactions at today's session by denying the genocide in Srebrenica during her response to a rejoinder from MP Pavle Grbović.

Grbović, a representative of the opposition parliamentary group, criticised Brnabić during the discussion for, as he said, attacks on representatives of the Bosniak and Albanian communities.

He emphasised that she should be ashamed of her words. In his rejoinder, he added that she sits among representatives of the political elite whose policies led to genocide, ethnic cleansing, and many misfortunes in the country.

Brnabić responded by claiming that the genocide in Srebrenica did not occur.

- No, it was not genocide. There was no genocide in Srebrenica - said Brnabić, provoking indignation among opposition MPs, as well as reactions from the wider public, especially in Bosnia and Herzegovina.

Such statements are a continuation of the long-standing policy of Serbian officials who refuse to recognise the events of 1995 as genocide, despite rulings by international courts, including the International Court of Justice (ICJ) and the International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia (ICTY), which classified the killing of more than 8,000 Bosniak men and boys in Srebrenica as genocide.

This incident in the Assembly is just one in a series of controversies surrounding Brnabić, known for her hardline stances and controversial statements, especially on issues related to the events of the Balkan wars.
