Belgrade on its feet: Rivers of people in the streets, welcoming students from all over Serbia

(Patria) - Thousands of Belgrade residents are tonight welcoming demonstrators arriving from other Serbian cities on Terazije in the city center, ahead of tomorrow's mass protest against Aleksandar Vučić's regime.

Hundreds of tractors with flat tires parked in the heart of Belgrade around Pioneer Park, across from the National Assembly of Serbia, and a river of people circulating around them, shouting derogatory remarks at those who have encamped in the park, is one of the scenes from Belgrade's busiest location.

The day before the big protest announced by "Students on Blockade" for tomorrow at 4 PM in front of the National Assembly of Serbia, the atmosphere in Belgrade is increasingly electrified, especially around Pioneer Park.

There, the "Students Who Want to Learn," as another group of students in Serbia calls themselves, have been encamped for days. They are characterized as supporters of Vučić and the current government, and according to informed sources, there are almost no students among them.

Tractors from all over Serbia were brought to their aid on Thursday night into Friday, and then parked as a shield on the sidewalks around Pioneer Park, presumably to protect them from attacks from the other side.

The license plates show that the tractors, including newer models as well as old "Fergusons," came from all over Serbia, and how they will return home is now the question...

While their owners are in the fenced-off area of Pioneer Park, where strong special police forces are guarding them along with counter-demonstrators, sabotage has been carried out on their machinery. Young men are going around the tractors and deflating the tires with combination pliers, and some are even putting sand in the fuel tanks to disable them.

- It's a precautionary measure, because we are afraid they will charge the "Students on Blockade" with tractors tomorrow, so we have to act preventively - explains one young man to Jutarnji list, while his friends are deflating the tractor tires.

A Belgrade woman sat on a tractor with her small dog in her lap, watching what was happening, while young men squeezed through the space between the tractors and the iron fences set up around the park, shouting at those inside the park.

- I've never sat on a tractor and probably never would have, but now I sat down to rest because I've been walking around these tractors that Vučić brought to Belgrade all afternoon. I am so angry, furious...

This is now a free circus show for us, and we are the audience, and those inside, we call them 'ćaci' (schoolchildren), because these loyalists couldn't even write the word 'đaci' correctly on one of their messages, are like a circus attraction we came to see.

Shameful. They are turning our city into a circus. Look at this oil leaking from the tractors onto the sidewalk. Will Mayor Šapić pay for cleaning this grease out of his own pocket? Of course not, it will come from our money, just like we pay for the fuel for these tractors - the Belgrade woman is indignant.

Diesel fuel has also leaked from some tractors onto the sidewalk. Meanwhile, there was no reaction from Pioneer Park towards the people walking around it outside the fence. Only from inside the park could the chant be heard: "Kosovo is the heart of Serbia!"

Serbian President Aleksandar Vučić called on those gathered in Pioneer Park to leave the area by Saturday, and they responded that they would decide on it within 24 hours.

Meanwhile, Belgrade was preparing to welcome students who have been walking and cycling from all over Serbia to the capital for days to attend the big protest tomorrow.
