(Patria) - Zrinjski succeeded again. Just like two years ago, the Mostar team secured a European autumn in Iceland against Breidablik.
After a 1:1 draw in the first match played in Mostar, Igor Štimac's team celebrated tonight in the second leg of the third round of Europa League qualifiers with a 2:1 victory away, writes Faktor.
The Mostar team has thus qualified for the competition's play-off, where their opponent will most likely be Dutch club Utrecht.
Should the Mostar team be eliminated from the Europa League, they will play in the league phase of the Conference League (three home matches, three away matches).
Zrinjski was the better team in Kopavogur, and for Igor Štimac, the match could not have started better in his pursuit of his first victory as coach.
In the seventh minute, Ivančić crossed, and Bilbija, who found himself in the best position in Breidablik's penalty area, managed to direct the ball into the net with his knee.
The Mostar team's next chance came in the 26th minute. This time, Memija crossed towards Breidablik's goal, Bilbija tried again, but the home team's goalkeeper saved his header towards the center of the goal.
Bilbija threatened again just before halftime with a shot from distance, but the ball went wide of the post.
Breidablik failed to achieve anything in the first half, and just as the second half began, Zrinjski doubled their lead. Kiš took a corner, and Valgeirsson scored an own goal.
The events on the field suggested that Zrinjski would easily see out the match, but an incident in the 60th minute made the finale more exciting.
Barišić fouled Einarsson, and the referee pointed to the penalty spot. Gunnlaugsson took responsibility and sent the ball to one side, while Karačić dived to the other, reducing his team's deficit.
The Icelanders, who had not seriously threatened until the penalty, became more aggressive after scoring, and seven minutes later, Karačić made a brilliant save to deny Zrinjski after an unimpeded shot from Steindorsson from 12 yards.
Until the end, Zrinjski paid more attention to defending their goal and looked for counter-attacking opportunities, but there were no further changes to the score.
It is also worth noting that Jonsson received a second yellow card, and thus a red card, in the second minute of added time.
