(Patria) - The most coveted award of the Olympic Games, the gold medal, contains only a minimal amount of gold.
It weighs 529 grams, but only six grams is gold - about 1.3 percent of the medal's total weight - while the rest is pure silver. The gold part consists only of a plate laid over a silver core.
Until the Stockholm Games in 1912, gold medals were made almost entirely of gold.
However, due to money-saving policies after World War I, the amount of gold for medals was reduced starting from Antwerp in 1920.
The silver medal, however, is made entirely of silver, while the bronze medal is a mixture of copper, tin, and zinc alloy.
Oxford Economics estimates the value of the Paris gold Olympic medals at 950 euros. The estimate is in line with current market values of 24k gold and sterling silver per gram.
However, the medals for Paris 2024 are adorned with details that could significantly increase their value in the future: a piece of iron from the original frame of the Eiffel Tower, placed in the center of the medal, with the Paris 2024 logo.
These metal pieces were removed from the iconic tower during various renovation and modernization projects over the years and were then preserved by the authorities.
Oxford Economics says the value of gold Olympic medals will increase over the years, reaching around 1,500 euros by 2032, when Australia hosts the Summer Games in Brisbane, writes Euronews.
