(Patria) - Tesla is recalling more than two million vehicles to fix a faulty driver warning system when using the Autopilot mode.
This information was announced today by the US National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, which added that Tesla will update the software to resolve this issue, AP reports.
The US regulator, after a two-year investigation, found that Tesla's system for warning drivers to pay attention when using the Autopilot mode is inadequate and can be misused.
The recall covers almost all vehicles Tesla has sold in the US since activating the Autopilot function in late 2015 and concerns all models from this manufacturer.
Traffic safety advocates have been calling for tighter regulation of driver monitoring systems in cars for years, which primarily check if the driver's hands are on the steering wheel.
A vehicle in Autopilot mode can automatically steer, accelerate, and brake within its lane, but the system is designed to assist the driver and cannot control the vehicle on its own, despite its name.
Independent tests have found the monitoring system to be easily tricked.
Tesla drivers in Autopilot mode have been caught driving drunk or sitting in the back seat.
