European Championship Record for Yellow Cards in a Single Match Broken

(Patria) - In a nervous match with a record 18 yellow and two red cards, Turkey defeated the Czech Republic 2-1 in Hamburg last night.

As the second-placed team in Group F, the Turks qualified for the round of 16, while the Czechs finished the competition last.

Turkey took the lead in the 51st minute with a goal from captain Hakan Calhanoglu, writes Index.hr.

Although they played with one player less from the 20th minute due to Antonin Barak's dismissal, the Czech Republic managed to equalize in the 66th minute, with Czech captain Tomas Soucek scoring.

The final score of 2-1 was set by Cenk Tosun in the fourth minute of stoppage time.

This match will go down in Euro history as the game with by far the most yellow cards shown – a total of 18.

That is as many as eight more than the previous record, with several matches in Euros history having had ten yellow cards.

Romanian referee Istvan Kovacs lost control of the match from the first minute, ultimately showing 18 yellow and two red cards.
