Slovenia extends border controls with Croatia

(Patria) - The Slovenian government has decided to extend controls on its internal Schengen borders with Croatia and Hungary until June 21, 2025, after the previously extended period expires on December 21.

The Slovenian government has decided to extend controls on the borders with these two countries due to an increased risk of terrorism, reports agency STA.

In November, they also announced that the police would conduct surveillance at border crossings in a way that minimally affects the flow of passengers, the environment, and the economy, especially the lives of residents along the borders.

Due to the deteriorating security situation in the Middle East and the increased risk of terrorism, Slovenia introduced border surveillance with Croatia and Hungary on October 21 last year.

In December, it extended this provision until June 22, and then for another six months - until December 21.

As for Italy, that country introduced temporary border surveillance with Slovenia last autumn due to, as explained in Rome, the changed situation in Europe and the Middle East. Since January 2024, it has been extending it every six months.

Controls on internal EU borders are also carried out by Germany, Denmark, France, Italy, Norway, and Sweden, while the Netherlands previously announced that it would introduce border controls with Belgium and Germany from December 9.
