Russell capitalized on Verstappen and Norris collision to achieve a surprise victory in Austria

(Patria) - George Russell is the surprise winner of the Formula 1 Austrian Grand Prix, held today at the Spielberg circuit.

The Mercedes driver took advantage of a collision between Max Verstappen and Lando Norris, who were battling for the lead, seven laps before the end, reports Index.hr.

Russell secured his second career victory and first of the season, as well as his team's first win this season. Oscar Piastri (McLaren) and Carlos Sainz Jr. (Ferrari) also finished on the podium.

The reigning champion and current standings leader Verstappen had a dominant lead for most of the race, but about twenty laps before the end, the situation became complicated after a slow pit stop by the Red Bull driver.

Norris then closed in, and a dramatic, multi-lap battle for the lead ensued.

It all culminated on lap 64 of 71 when contact occurred between Verstappen and Norris. Both had to pit afterwards, and the McLaren driver could not continue the race.

Verstappen dropped to fifth place as a result, and was ultimately deemed at fault for the collision, receiving a 10-second penalty, but this did not affect his final position.

Despite his poor finish, Verstappen extended his lead in the overall standings over his closest rivals.

The triple reigning champion leads with 237 points, followed by Norris with 156 and Charles Leclerc, who finished 11th today, with 150 points.
