Croatian Parliament Dissolved, Regular Elections in April or May

(Patria) - The Croatian Parliament was dissolved today by the votes of all present deputies, i.e., 143 out of a total of 151, which means that regular parliamentary elections will be held in April or May.

The Prime Minister of Croatia and head of the ruling HDZ, Andrej Plenković, recently announced the dissolution of the Parliament, in order, as he said, to allow sufficient time for the formation of a new parliamentary majority and Government.

The decision on the election date is to be made by the President of Croatia, Zoran Milanović, within 30 to 60 days, and the elections can be held between April 14 and May 12.

The ruling majority had previously rejected the opposition's proposal to dissolve the Parliament two weeks ago. The last convocation of the Croatian Parliament was constituted on July 22, 2020.

Of the 151 deputies of the Croatian Parliament, 140 are elected in ten constituencies in Croatia, while three are elected by the diaspora, i.e., voters who do not reside in Croatia.

Eight seats are reserved for representatives of national minorities, who are elected in a special, 12th constituency.

In the previous parliamentary elections, held on July 5, 2020, the coalition led by HDZ won the most votes - 36.4 percent, and the opposition alliance gathered around SDP took second place with 24.3 percent of the votes.

In addition to parliamentary elections, European elections will be held in Croatia this year - on June 9, and presidential elections - at the end of the year.
