(Patria) - At yesterday's session of the Presidency of BiH, the proposal of certain members of the Presidency to extend Nermin Nikšić's mandate as SDP president until the General Elections in 2026 was supported.
When this proposal was considered at the session, he was not present at the time. Regardless of some comments that elections for president should also be held, given that his mandate was already extended once in 2023 outside the SDP Statute, the majority was still louder. Nikšić's continuation at the head of the SDP was pushed by cadres from the FBiH Government who are members of the Presidency, federal deputies, but also by those who benefited in some way since Nikšić has been heading the Federation of BiH Government.
In order to somewhat appease the reactions due to the mandate extension, it was decided that all other elections within the SDP would be conducted, except for the president.
This decision of the SDP Presidency should be confirmed by the Main Board within the next 15 days, or possibly at the beginning of April.
It is reminded that the last session of the SDP Main Board was held on February 24, when certain members opposed the extension of Nikšić's mandate, including Zukan Helez, who was the most serious candidate for the new president.
Since that session, Nikšić has used his time to visit cities and municipalities with a delegation from the FBiH Government, and along the way, he lobbied party organizations to support his continuation at the head of the SDP.
As stated yesterday, an additional reason for extending Nikšić's mandate is the current political situation, and that elections for the SDP president would divert focus from key political processes in the country.
