(Patria) - In August 2025, a total of 790,177 new cars were registered in Europe, a five percent increase compared to the same month last year, according to the latest data from Jato Dynamics, reports Autoklub.

At the top of the list was the Volkswagen T-Roc, a compact SUV that is just saying goodbye to its old generation, with its successor introduced at the end of August.

Despite the model change, the T-Roc achieved a 14 percent increase with 14,693 registrations, demonstrating why it is one of VW's key assets in the C-SUV segment.

In second place was the Dacia Sandero with 13,834 registrations, a decrease of 11 percent, while the Toyota Yaris Cross finished third with 12,201 vehicles and an eight percent lower sales than last year.

The Volkswagen Tiguan attracted particular attention, jumping by as much as 23 percent with 12,094 registrations to take fourth place, while the Renault Clio finished fifth with almost the same number (12,091), but with a slight decrease of one percent.

The decrease in the Clio is assumed to be related to customer expectations ahead of the arrival of the new generation, presented at the IAA Mobility show in Munich.

In sixth place was the Hyundai Tucson, with a 28 percent increase, making it the most successful Korean model in Europe last month.

This was followed by the Dacia Duster and Toyota Yaris with decreases of 16 and six percent, respectively, while the Opel Corsa and Volkswagen Golf rounded out the list.

The Golf, with 9,444 registrations, lost two percent, confirming that the legendary compact is slowly losing ground to newer competition.

Particular emphasis is placed on Chinese manufacturers, whose sales in Europe are growing explosively. In August, they sold over 43,500 vehicles, an increase of 121 percent compared to the same month in 2024.

This allowed them to overtake Audi (41,300) and Renault (37,800). Although there are about 40 Chinese brands on the market, as much as 84 percent of registrations come from the five largest – MG, BYD, Jaecoo, Omoda, and Leapmotor.

In August, MG overtook Tesla and Fiat, BYD finished ahead of Suzuki and Jeep, while newcomers like Jaecoo and Omoda have already left brands like Alfa Romeo and Mitsubishi behind.

The electric car market continued its strong growth in August, with a total of 159,756 registrations, a 27 percent increase compared to last year.

The Tesla Model Y remains the best-selling electric car in Europe, but it recorded a 37 percent decrease with a total of 8,330 vehicles.

At the same time, Tesla as a brand lost its primacy in the electric segment, with 14,753 registrations it lags behind Volkswagen, which recorded 16,523 electric vehicle registrations in August.

This clearly shows that European manufacturers are gradually restoring balance in a segment that has been synonymous with Tesla for years.
