Extreme sports athlete Felix Baumgartner (56) dies

(Patria) - Austrian extreme sports athlete Felix Baumgartner (56) died in a paragliding accident.

The accident occurred near the Italian coastal town of Porto Sant'Elpidio, and Baumgartner's body was found in a hotel swimming pool.

According to Italian sources, Baumgartner lost control of his paraglider around 4 PM, after reportedly feeling unwell while in the air. The aircraft crashed directly into the hotel pool.



Baumgartner gained worldwide fame in 2012 when he performed the legendary jump from the stratosphere from an altitude of 39 kilometers, which was watched live by several million people worldwide.

In recent years, he lived in the Swiss city of Arbon, in the canton of Thurgau.
