(Patria) - American gymnast Simone Biles and Swedish pole vaulter Armand Duplantis are the best athletes of 2024, according to the International Association of Sports Journalists (AIPS).
Biles and Duplantis achieved convincing victories in the vote of 518 journalists from 111 countries.
Biles received twice as many points as the second-placed Spanish footballer Aitana Bonmati, while Duplantis collected 235 points more than the second-placed Serbian tennis player Novak Djokovic.
Biles won three gold medals and one silver medal at the Olympic Games in Paris this year, while Duplantis dominated the pole vault during the year, and in Paris, in addition to gold, he also set a new world record.
Among female athletes, third and fourth place were taken by track and field athletes - Julien Alfred from Saint Lucia and Sifan Hassan from the Netherlands.
Among male athletes, third place went to the brilliant Slovenian cyclist Tadej Pogačar, and fourth to the French swimmer Leon Marchand.
