Euro Continues: Switzerland - Italy and Germany - Denmark Vie for Quarter-Final Spots

(Patria) - The European Championship in Germany continues today with the first matches of the round of 16.

Two games will be played where Switzerland - Italy and Germany - Denmark will be vying for a spot in the quarter-finals.

Switzerland - Italy

European champions Italy will play Switzerland in the round of 16 of Euro 2024 after barely making it through the group stage. The Italy - Switzerland match will be played on Saturday at 5:50 PM.

Both Switzerland and Italy finished second in their respective groups, with Switzerland coming close to winning their group. The Swiss are undefeated so far in the tournament, drawing 1:1 with Germany and Scotland, and beating Hungary 3:1.

Italy secured second place in Group B with a last-minute equalizer against Croatia, making it 1:1. The Italians, who are defending European champions, lost 1:0 to Spain in the group stage and defeated Albania 2:1.

Italy and Switzerland have played 61 matches against each other so far, with the statistics overwhelmingly in favour of Italy, who have won 29 times. The Swiss have only eight wins against the Italians, with their last victory coming just over 31 years ago.
Neither coach will have their full squad available. Switzerland will be missing Silvan Widmer due to yellow cards, and on the other side, Riccardo Calafiori will not play for the same reason. The winner of this tie will play the winner of the England – Slovakia match in the quarter-finals.

Germany - Denmark

The second round of 16 match, kicking off at 9 PM at the stadium in Dortmund, will be between hosts Germany and Denmark. The Germans enter this encounter after finishing first in Group A with wins against Scotland 5:1 and Hungary 2:0, and a draw against Switzerland.

Denmark finished second in Group C, where they drew all three of their matches: 1:1 with Slovenia and England, and 0:0 with Serbia.

This will be the 29th duel between Germany and Denmark, with the Germans having won 15 and the Danes 8 of the previous 28 encounters.

German defender Jonathan Tah is suspended for this match due to yellow cards, while the Scandinavian team will also be weakened by the absence of Morten Hjulmand, who also has two accumulated yellow cards.

The winner of the Germany – Denmark match will play Spain or Georgia in the quarter-finals.
