(Patria) - The U.S. National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) expects its number of employees to decrease by 3,780 to around 14,000, agency spokeswoman Cheryl Warner told TASS.
According to her, NASA is striving to "balance the need to become a more focused and efficient organization and work to ensure that we remain fully capable of continuing the Golden Age of exploration and innovation, including trips to the Moon and Mars."
Warner said that about 3,870 employees (21% of NASA's workforce) have agreed to participate in two programs that provide staff members with the opportunity to voluntarily resign in exchange for additional payment or other concessions.
"The expected number of remaining NASA civil servants after both deferred resignation programs, as well as normal attrition (about 500) in the same time period, is around 14,000," the spokeswoman specified, adding that "these numbers may vary."
Earlier, the administration of U.S. President Donald Trump launched major reductions in the number of employees in a number of agencies. Entrepreneur Elon Musk, who until recently headed the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), actively participated in this.
