World's best tennis player Sinner suspended for three months

(Patria) - The current world's best tennis player and ATP list number 1, Italian Jannik Sinner, has been suspended for three months and is not eligible to compete in tournaments in the upcoming period.

Last year's current Australian Open winner tested positive for drugs twice.

Wada (World Anti-Doping Agency), which appealed the decision to acquit Sinner to the Court of Arbitration for Sport (Cas), says it accepts his explanation that he was unintentionally contaminated by the physiotherapist with the banned substance clostebol.

Sinner has officially been banned from playing tennis from February 9 to May 4, 2025.

However, this means he will be able to play in the second Grand Slam tournament of the year, Roland Garros.

"We accept that the three-time Grand Slam champion did not intend to cheat, that the drug provided no performance-enhancing benefit, and that it occurred without his knowledge as a result of his team's negligence," Wada's statement reads.

However, Sinner will have to serve part of the penalty according to the rules, which is a suspension for the aforementioned three months.

Sinner came under various comments after last year's findings, and many believe he has caused great damage to the sport of tennis.

Reactions may only come now, as Sinner received the suspension after the Australian Open, where he won a new Grand Slam title in his career.

In the last six months, we have seen quite a few cases of doping use in the world of tennis.

The women's number 1 in tennis, player Iga Swiatek, was also suspended for one month in November due to a positive drug test.
