Minute of silence on Italian football pitches in honor of Sven-Göran Eriksson

(Patria) - In Italy, football matches will begin with a minute of silence in memory of the legendary Swedish coach Sven-Göran Eriksson, who passed away yesterday at the age of 76.

The footballers of the two strongest Italian leagues - Serie A and Serie B - will observe a minute of silence to pay tribute to Eriksson, confirmed the Italian Football Federation (FIGC).

- The news of his death is a great sadness for Italian football. Respected and admired for his professional and human qualities, Eriksson was a great coach whose memory will forever be linked to Italy.

His love for football and life touched everyone and united fans without any differences in long and emotional applause - said FIGC President Gabriele Gravina.

The Swede passed away yesterday at the age of 76. In January of this year, he revealed that he had been diagnosed with terminal pancreatic cancer.

Eriksson's last job was in Karlstad, Sweden, where he served as sporting director. In Italy, he worked as a coach for Roma, Fiorentina, Sampdoria, and Lazio.

He won the Coppa Italia with Roma (1986) and Sampdoria (1994), and had the most success with Lazio.

With the Rome club, he was Serie A champion in 2000, won the Italian Cup twice (1998, 2000), the Italian Super Cup twice (1998, 2000), the Cup Winners' Cup (1999), and the European Super Cup (1998).
