(Patria) - Croatian footballer Luka Modrić will remain at Real Madrid until June 30, 2025, the club announced on its social media.
Despite the club's unwritten practice of not signing one-year contracts with older players, Modrić is an exception in this case.
He rejected two lucrative offers because his priority is to stay at Real, even with a significant salary reduction.
Modrić has been at the club since 2012, has won 25 trophies in 531 appearances, and will now become the team's first captain.
He shares the record for the most trophies won in the club's history with Nacho Fernandez - as many as 26.
However, he has the opportunity to become the most decorated player on August 14 in the UEFA Super Cup final against Atalanta.
He can also become Real's oldest player in an official match, a record currently held by Ferenc Puskas.
Modrić will celebrate his 39th birthday on September 9, and Puskas's record from 1966 is 39 years and 36 days.
